Chapter 1
The Cosmology of Healing: Physical and Spiritual Afflictions
To understand traditional Ghanaian medicine, one must first grasp the underlying cosmology that shapes it. In most Ghanaian cultures—whether Akan, Ewe, Ga-Adangbe, or Dagomba—health is not merely the absence of disease; it is a state of equilibrium. Illness is often perceived as a disruption of this balance, which can be caused by natural factors (such as bad food or water), but is equally likely to be the result of spiritual, moral, or social transgressions.
Ailments are broadly categorized into two types: those of a purely natural or physical origin, and those with spiritual or mystical causes. A fever or a broken bone might be treated with physical remedies. However, chronic illnesses, sudden unexplained deaths, or repeated misfortunes are often attributed to the anger of ancestors, the malice of witches, or the breaking of a taboo. Therefore, healing must address the root cause, which often requires spiritual intervention alongside physical treatment.
The interconnectedness of the physical and spiritual worlds is central to this worldview. A person's health is seen as intimately linked to their social relationships, their moral conduct, and their harmony with the natural environment. When illness strikes, it is often interpreted as a symptom of a broader imbalance within the community or a rift between the living and the ancestral spirits.
This holistic approach to healing emphasizes the importance of diagnosis through divination. Before any treatment is administered, a traditional healer must determine the true cause of the affliction. This might involve consulting the spirits, interpreting dreams, or observing specific signs in the natural world. Only when the root cause is identified can a comprehensive treatment plan, often involving both herbal remedies and spiritual rituals, be prescribed.
